Life as a North Yorkshire Artist – Inspired by the Wild Heart of Yorkshire

ree

There’s something quietly grounding about waking up in North Yorkshire. Before the emails, the paint, or the endless to-do list, I step outside, for a walk with studio dog Dell, and I breathe it in - the moors, the woodland, the crisp air, and that particular kind of silence that feels full rather than empty. It’s the sort of landscape that doesn’t shout; it whispers, and if you listen closely enough, it gives you all the inspiration you could ever need.

Being a North Yorkshire artist is more than just a profession; it’s a way of living. My days rarely follow a straight line. Some mornings I’m deep in the rhythm of a pet portrait commission, carefully layering fine brushstrokes to capture the spirit of a much-loved companion. Other days, I lose myself in the wild, a tiger emerging from the dark, wild horses galloping across open plains, or barn owl hunting a twilight.

These creatures connect me to something much bigger. Through my wildlife art, I aim to celebrate and protect the natural world; telling stories of life, freedom, and resilience through paint. North Yorkshire has its own rhythm that suits an artist’s heart. The weather changes by the hour, the light dances differently across the moors each day, and the people, deeply rooted yet creative - keep you grounded. There’s a generosity here, a shared pride in where we live. Local cafés display local artwork, communities rally around small businesses, and strangers become collectors and friends. It’s a place where creativity and connection thrive side by side. Click on the buttons below to find out about two cafes that I like to frequent - they have some very good art work on their walls too!

Then there’s the studio; my sanctuary on the edge of the moors. Having a dedicated art studio has transformed the way I work. It’s where ideas spill out, where music plays softly in the background, and where every brushstroke carries a little bit of Yorkshire spirit. From here, I connect with collectors across the world, share conservation-themed art, and remind myself that even from a rural corner of England, fine art can travel far. Of course, being a full-time artist isn’t all romance and light streaming through the windows. There are deadlines, admin days, and creative blocks, but even then, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Because every piece that leaves my studio carries a fragment of my home - the rolling hills, the moorland light, the wildlife that inspires me daily. Living and working as a North Yorkshire wildlife artist has taught me balance: between solitude and connection, creativity and business, wildness and calm. It’s taught me to notice, to slow down, and to create with purpose. Whether I’m painting a Yorkshire landscape, a horse, or a stag in the ferns, it all comes back to this place. Yorkshire doesn’t just inspire my art. It’s part of it.
