HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR ORIGINAL ARTWORK

'ART OUTLIVES THE MOMENT IT'S MADE, CARRYING FEELING, MEMORY, AND MEANING LONG AFTER WE'RE GONE'.

Whether you’ve just invested in a new painting, or you’ve cherished a favourite for years, looking after your original artwork ensures it remains as beautiful and meaningful as the day it was created. Here’s my artist’s guide to caring for your artwork — so it continues to tell its story for years to come.

 Create the Right Environment

Avoid direct sunlight — UV light fades pigments and varnish. Keep temperature and humidity stable: around 18–21 °C and 40–60% humidity. Avoid high-moisture or heat zones like kitchens, bathrooms or fireplaces.

Handling and Installation

Use clean hands or cotton gloves. Use secure wall fixings suited to the weight, and avoid hanging on exterior walls or above radiators to prevent tension on the canvas.

 Framing and Glazing

Framing protects as well as enhances your artwork. Canvas paintings usually shouldn’t be under glass, they need airflow. Works on paper (like sketches and prints) should be framed with UV-filtering glass or acrylic, using acid-free materials.

 Cleaning and Maintenance

Dust lightly with a soft, natural-hair brush. Avoid sprays, water or cloths. Check the back of your artwork twice a year for damp or warping. If you notice any damage or cracking, contact a professional conservator.

 Storage and Transport

Keep canvases upright, not stacked flat. Wrap them with breathable, acid-free materials instead of plastic. Protect both front and back with rigid boards when transporting.

 Insurance and Documentation

Keep detailed records of each piece — photos, purchase certificates, and framing details. Document condition annually and confirm your insurance policy covers fine art.#

Why It Matters

An original artwork isn’t just paint on canvas — it’s memory, connection and emotion. Caring for it properly honours both the artist’s process and your investment. Each piece I create carries part of my story; and your story, when you care for it, that story stays alive and is continued.
