There is something timeless about the wild horse—raw freedom, untamed energy, and spirit that refuses to be contained. Capturing that essence on canvas has been my latest journey, and with the final brushstrokes now dry, I’m taking a leap of faith: submitting my painting to the Society of Equestrian Artists’ Horse in Art 2025 exhibition—my very first submission to this prestigious showcase.
The Society of Equestrian Artists & Horse in Art
Founded in 1979, the SEA brings together artists who share a deep passion for the horse in all its forms. Their annual Horse in Art exhibition has become the pinnacle of equestrian creativity, celebrating power, beauty, and partnership.
This year’s exhibition runs from 7th October to 1st November 2025 at The Garden Rooms, Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn—a setting as elegant as the art it will hold. In partnership with Bedmax, it promises to be a vibrant meeting of tradition, artistry, and horse welfare.
From Inspiration to Canvas
For me, the wild horse was the only possible subject. I wanted to capture more than anatomy or movement—I wanted spirit. Every brushstroke carried the challenge of portraying not just form, but freedom: the rush of hooves, the toss of a mane, the spark in the eye.
The process wasn’t without its struggles—finding the balance between realism and emotion pushed me as an artist. Yet those challenges were also the moments where the painting came alive, where the horse seemed to breathe beneath the paint.
Taking the Leap
Submitting this new art work to the Horse in Art exhibition feels like crossing a threshold. Sunmission day is done, Pre Selection looms on 7th September - hopefully it will be accepted. If successful, Handing in day is 5th October, followed by the Private View and Awards Ceremony on 6th October—occasions where hopefully my work, for the first time, will stand alongside other talented artists.
Whether it is accepted, sells, wins recognition, or simply hangs for visitors to pause before, this submission is a milestone: the beginning of sharing my vision of the wild horse with a wider audience.
Looking Ahead
Whatever the outcome, the journey of finishing this wild horse painting and sending it into the world has been transformative. It feels like both an ending and a beginning—the completion of one canvas, and the start of a collection that celebrate this magnificient animal.
